Please pray for us–hurricane coming!

Please pray for us. Unless a last minute change, Hurricane Irma will make a direct hit Monday morning on our location. I mean, right on our location like an arrow hitting the bull’s eye on a target. The location predicted above (NOAA map) for 8 AM Monday is directly on us.

Due to the shape of the Gulf’s coastline, there has not been a hit here for 100 years.

We are predicted to experience 24 hours of tropical storm force winds and up to nine hours of hurricane-force winds. Rainfall is expected between 8 and 12 inches and a coastal storm surge of 4 to 7 feet above ground level. Combined with an incoming tide, local low-lying communities like Yankeetown could experience 18 feet of water. That size flooding will be at roof-top level for single story buildings.

Because of equipment needed for my ALS–cough assist machine, Hoyal lift, power wheel chair–our mobility is limited.

Yesterday a neighbor and a friend put up our storm shutters, designed to handle Category 4 winds, as is our house and roof structure. We have filled numerous large tubs with water and have a small generator ready to kick in.

My brother, Alan and his wife, Jane, and daughter, Megan and husband, Brent, are coming here from Yankeetown, about 12 miles away. Yankeetown has a mandatory evacuation and will be hit by storm surge. They live 1 mile from the Gulf. where the Withlacoochee feeds into the Gulf.  We live 5 miles inland from mandatory evacuation zone at an elevation of 34 ft above sea level.

Our biggest danger is falling trees–large oaks. We live the Withlacoochee River. Flooding for 1-2 weeks per sheriff’s dept. is inevitable, but we live 2.5 miles from dam. If they open dam, we’re fine. If they don’t we’re likely not.

The song the Isaaks sing is certainly apropos:

It may bring me poverty.
But the one who feeds the sparrow,
Is the one who stands by me.
And the path that is my portion
May be through the flame or flood;
But His presence goes before me
And I’m covered with His blood.

Many things about tomorrow
I don’t seem to understand
But I know who holds tomorrow
And I know who holds my hand.

  2. Sent from my iPhone Dear Precious Family-in- Christ. We will pray that the Lord’s hand will turn the storm away from hitting you. He has done that for us-example- Andrew and David. Wilma was coming up west coast and made a right angle turn and came across the state and hit us. May His mercy be poured out upon you and yours. You came to mind as soon as we heard the predicted path. We had five family homes in Houston that went through Harvey. and were surrounded by water but their homes were sparred while others were not. May He steer Irma away from you. We love all of you. Gayle and Ev

  7. Praying fervently for you and Ruth and your family from Yankeetown.

The contemporary Christian chorus I’ve been reciting (and posted on our church’s marquee sign) is,

In the eye of the storm,
    You remain in control,
In the middle of the war,
    You guard my soul.
    You alone are the anchor
    When my sails are torn.
    Your love surrounds me,
In the eye of the storm.

Praying for His perfect peace and protection.

    God bless.
